Influenced by the foreign researchers, many Chinese scholars, such as,Chen Yuan, Jia Yuxin, Dai Weidong have also made great contributions in this field.An address term is a word, phrase, name, or title (or some combination of these) used inaddressing someone. It may be friendly, unfriendly, or neutral; respectful, disrespectful, orcomradely. Address terms, as an indispensable social behaviour of human society, is of greathistorical and cultural significance. They can reflect the mental state of the society and valueorientation of their users, as well as the differences in language using between different genders.The changes of address terms can reflect the social influence and different social expectation togenders. At the same time, different genders affect and restrict the emergence and developmentof address terms. The study on address terms began in the 19th century, with some Americananthropologists in their study on societies and races.Many researchers both in and abroad havemade some researches on address terms, such as Albert Gilman and Roger Brown, MargueriteFord and Roger Brown, Susan Ervin-Tripp, and Friedrike Braun, in the west, and Zhao Yuanren,Zhu Wanjin, Tian Huigang, in China.As one important part of language system, address terms have a close relationship withgender. Address term is the address representing people's identity and role in certaininterpersonal relationship in human society. There also exists sexism in address terms. However,researches about sexism in English address terms are not deep enough. This thesis will deal withthe performance of sexism in English address terms, reasons for this phenomenon, as well assuggested strategies to achieve the equality in language.
