      Chapter 1 Introduction引言

1.1 The Background of the Research研究背景
美国俚语是英语的语言品种之一。语言学的研究表明,在许多语言中,人们会改变他们的讲话从一个品种或风格上另一视情况而定。人们经常用在他们的日常英语中的俚语。American slangs is one of the language varieties in English language. Linguistic researchhas shown that in many languages, people will change their speech from one variety or style toanother, depending on the situation. People often use slang terms in their daily English. Statisticssuggests that slang words and expressions take up ten percent of the vocabulary of AmericanEnglish on average.https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/  They use slang and swear words that often confuse non-native speakers.Everyday language, the discourse of everyday people, has never worried about being politicallycorrect. If someone wants to fully understand native Americans' English, to some extent, he/shehas to learn slang and frequently-used daily language However, everyday English is far removedfrom English textbook. In textbook English,, there are many grammar rules, but people are notalways following these rules. For example, nobody talks like a book, or like a news broadcaster. Most Chinese English learners may have the same experience, when watching Americanfilms or TV series without Chinese translation; they cannot fully understand the language of thefilms. The reason for that is that there are many slang words and terms or idioms in Americanfilms or TV series. If the viewers did not know slang before, these slang terms may be screenedout. However, American slangs is of a complicated language phenomenon. American slangswords and terms indicate the characteristics of American culture, American people and theAmerican society. In the past, slang was considered to be a coarse or vulgar language, because inthe early days. Most slang vocabulary came from jargon, cant or argot. And it was used by thepeople underworld groups, for example, criminals, beggars or other some under-class people. But the development of slang is quite different. Slang only can be developed in the colloquialway.Today, slangs can be found at all parts of the society, business world, sports, or otherentertainment industry. And we can know that slang come from common people, unlike thegrammatical rules invented by linguistics or grammarians. As Eric Partridge mentioned that theinvention of slang did not result from scientific laws, or grammatical rules. It spreads incolloquial speech. "To the ordinary man, of average intelligence and middle-class position, slangcomes from every direction, from above, from below, and from all sides as well as from center[...].It is impossible to qualify the amount of slang existent at the present time, but everyoneargues that it is found at all levels of society [...]" (Partridge4). So the non-conventionality ofslang makes a distinction in language style and register between slang and the standard languageor the written language acknowledged by the society. In China, in recent years, an increasingnumber of scholars began to realize the importance in studying and learning English slang, especially American slangs. This paper aims at discussing the features and functions of Americanslangs within the framework of language and American society. The lines in "Sex and the City"will be taken into discussion in this paper. The study of American slan论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
