He has realized thatwhat is needed instead is a cognitive theory—a theory that is based on the capacitiesof the human mind rather than the capacities of the mathematical systems that happento be used by logicians. ( Fauconnier 1994: ix)The psychological cognitive spaces are also recognized as mental spaces, which are“small conceptual packets constructed as we think and talk, for purposes of localunderstanding and action”. (Fauconnier and Turner 2002:40) As thought and discoursedevelop, they are simultaneously interconnected and interacted. Sometimes, they canmodify each other. In the 1990s, Fauconnier and Turner proposed the existence of ageneral cognitive process conceptual blending which considers mental spaces asinputs. Blending is in principle a simple operation, but in practice gives rise to amyriad of possibilities. It operates on two input mental spaces to yield a third space,the blend. The blend inherits partial structural from the input spaces and has emergentstructure of its own (Fauconnier 2010: 149).On the basis of mental space theory, CIT, also called conceptual blending theory,proposed by Fauconnier and Turner and further developed by Coulson andOakley(2000:184), gives new visions and insight into our way of thinking, creatingand understanding the world around us. In fact, the general concept of CIT has beenstudied by western linguists. Fauconnier and Turner devote themselves toinvestigating such phenomena as well. These authors, however, take blends to besomewhat exotic, marginal manifestations of meaning. (Fauconnier & Turner2002:397) CIT is rather a further development of this line of research, for it confirmsin novel ways that similar general properties of neural binding and simulation liebehind sensorimotor activities, concrete interaction with the world, human-scaleeveryday experience, abstract reasoning and scientific or artistic invention.(Fauconnier 2001: 1)Love metaphor’s apprehending involves a great many psychological factors, forlove is the most complex feeling in the world and metaphors are understood on thebasis of abstract concepts.
