intends to explore theregularities underlying the translation of metonymies and finally try to make someexplanations about these regularities from the perspective of language, culture andtranslator’s individuality. All these purposes boil down to the theoretical and practicalconsiderations which can contribute a bit to translation theory construction andtranslation operation.

1.3 Organization of the thesis论文结构

Altogether there are six parts in this thesis. Part 1 serves as an introduction to thestudy objectives, providing an account of the research background and the meaning ofthe research. Part 2 is the literature review of the previous researches on metonymy andmetonymy translation. This part is further divided into five sections: the first section is areview of the rhetoric approach to metonymy; the second a review of the cognitiveapproach to metonymy; the third section is review of studies on body parts metonymies;the fourth section is the literature review of the translation of metonymies; and the lastsection will provide a bird’s view of the researches on the translation of Hongloumenginto English.Part 3 serves as a theoretical preparation for the research in the following. It startsfrom the concept of descriptive translation studies and continues to investigate the basicconcepts and ideas of the theories of metonymy and explore their possible application toa descriptive research on the translation of metonymies. Part 4 gives a detaileddescription of the methodology of the research, including hypothesis and questions of thestudy in this thesis, the tool the study will use, the possibility of the study, and datacollection from the novel Hongloumeng and its translations by the Yangs and Hawkes.Part 5 is the most important part of the thesis. This part is further divided into fivesections: the first section is concerned with the criteria and process of defining andconfirming body parts metonymies in the novel; the second section is the collection andstatistical analysis of body parts metonymies in this novel and their translations; the thirdsection is a comparison of typical samples between the translations of the Yangs andHawkers; the fourth section explores the regularities of translating body partsmetonymies; and the last section focuses on the explanation of the regularities intranslating body parts metonymies.The last part is the conclusion. In this part some major findings are summarizedand the significance is discussed, some conclusions also being reached as to metonymytranslation. Then after a brief analysis of the limitations of the present study are thesuggestions for further researches.
