1.1 Research significance研究意义

From the perspective of cognition, theirstudy has opened up a new world for the research of metaphor, which regards metaphornot merely as a linguistic phenomenon, but basically a cognitive phenomenon and animportant way of thinking.https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/    As it has been studied further, the field of metaphorical studyhas been broadened in recent years and becomes a hot topic and common interest andconcern for psychologists, logicians, sociologists and anthropologists as well asrhetoricians and linguists.The study of metaphor has experienced a long period of flourishing up to now, andin the meanwhile it arrives at its climax in the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, theresearch of metaphor translation, compared with metaphor study, has received much lessattention and been “sadly neglected”. Still, the primary problem of translation is how todeal with metaphor, and “the most important particular problem is the translation ofmetaphor” (Newmark, 2001: 104), and it exerts a great impact on the quality oftranslation. But the number of related papers and thesis entitled metaphor translation arerelatively small both at home and abroad, and there are extremely rare monographswhich mainly include the writings of Wang Bin (2004), Liu Fagong (2008) and XiaoJiayan (2009). Therefore, it is quite essential to give a literature review of metaphortranslation and if necessary, apply the theories to practical use, namely, find out thetranslation laws in a certain text by statistical analysis under the guidance of descriptivetranslation studies.In addition, Lu Xun’s works have great realistic meaning, and they are the model ofChinese literature for its quality of ideology, knowledge, focalization and militancy, andthus it is worth studying. However, few researches of related writings are carried on interms of translation studies or metaphor studies. In addition, Lu Xun’s works are known2to English readers through numerous translations and one of the English versions of thisbook translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang is highly praised because theirtranslation can present the content, style, tone and the mellifluence of the original.Therefore, it must be valuable to conduct a research on metaphor translation bycomparison of Lu Xun’s works and its English version within the framework ofconceptual metaphor.Based on the conceptual metaphors proposed by Lakoff and Johnson and theselected stories Nahan and its English version, the thesis tries to find out and compare thebody organ metaphors in SL and TL and through statistical analysis, elaborates to explorethe characteristics of body organ metaphors and the translation strategies and laws, andgives the explanations on the results.
1.2 Research objectives研究目标
This thesis is a study of metaphor translation under the guidance of conceptualmetaphor.
