ͻ񻣼The goal of the autonomous learning is the successful learning. Learners who haveautonomous learning ability are likely to achieve more in their studies than those are mostlyrelay on teachers. Learners who can learn something from their own experiences and havetheir own learning system will be seen as successful one.

Chapter 1 General Introduction

The concepts of learner autonomy have gained growing concern in foreign language learning. Frankly speaking, autonomy can be understood as theability of taking charge of one¡¯s own study. Researchers both in China and other countries realize that not only the students but also the teachers should be responsible for their learning. In the process of learning and teaching, the teacher has the responsibility to create the atmosphere for students to learn. The definition of autonomy has been quickly accepted, as can be seen in the following researchers: Autonomy is a human right (Benson, 2000); autonomous learning is more effective than other approaches to learning; learners need totake charge of their own learning in order to make the most of available resources, especially outside the classroom(Waite, 1994). As increasing researchers study the learner autonomy, they begin to know that there is close relations between learner autonomy and language proficiency. However, it is lack of strong links in theories considering the correlations of learner autonomy and language proficiency. Under the inspiration of constructivist theories, humanistic psychology and cognitive theories, a lot of research has been done on learner autonomy from different views. However, as the learner autonomy is emphasized, more and more people begin to pay attention to its relations with language proficiency.

1.1 Research Background
Since Holec¡¯s Autonomy and Foreign Language Learning report publish, the idea ofautonomy has become a hot issue discussed by everyone in applied linguistics. There hasbeen a change from emphases the teacher to concern for the learner, from how to promoteteaching to how to learn well by the individual themselves. As we can see, a lot of books, articles and studies are about autonomous learning, which can show that it plays a vital role inlanguage pedagogy in western countries. Many researchers (Benson, 2003; Dickinson, 1987,1995; Holec, 1981; Kenny, 1993; Lamb, 2000; Little, 1991, 1995) have explored the conceptsof learner autonomy and language proficiency, and the relationships between them. Since thelearner-centered method was emphasized in 1998, the studies of learner autonomy have got much attention. In 2000, the new Curriculum Requirements for English was published, whichclearly ruled learner autonomy as a goal of foreign language teaching. It represents thechange in view of teaching methodology, course context, and theories. Then, it concerns moreabout the students learning instead of teaching skills and effective way of teaching. Journalssuch as: Foreign Language Teaching and Research, The World of Foreign Languages,Modern Foreign Language, The Journal of Foreign Language, Foreign Language Research soon, are all about the method and the context of the study.
