摘要:According to the researchers abroad, the process of language attrition is affected by thefactors such as proficiency level prior to attrition, time of attrition on set, exposure to targetlanguage, age of language attrition, foreign language learning mode, affective factors, andliteracy.

In this study, the framework is specified according to the tertiary level of learningEnglish giving the history and length of contact of three months.The SLA theory provides another fundamental basis for situating the study. As Ellis (1985)pointed out foreign language learning was primarily located in the classroom. As a result therewill be major differences in the way L2 is learnt when compared to L1. This proposition appliesto the situation in China where English is a foreign language. In SLA, researchers haveobtained some evidence indicating the existence of gender differences in motivation andattitude. The study provides empirical evidence to further testify gender differences of languageattrition.


1.2.2 Practical Value
From the perspective of economics of education, the phenomenon of English attritioncauses a waste of time, money and efforts that invested in English education in China. It is toobad that great investment only yields few profits. One reason is that we only pay attention to theinvestment on English acquisition rather than the maintenance of English proficiency. As NiChuan bin (2006) put it, English competence is a product. Besides selling, the after–salemaintenance is also very important. Through the exploration of language attrition from genderperspective, the present study can give some useful advice to the economics of Englisheducation in China.


Part Two Literature Review


This chapter includes two parts: the first part presents the theoretical background oflanguage attrition in the order of definition, taxonomy, main theories and research abroad and athome. The second part introduces gender as a factor influencing language attrition.


2.1 Language Attrition


2.1.1 Definition of Language Attrition
There are a substantial number of terms that have been applied to describe a decrease inlanguage skills proficiency, such as attrition, death, forgetting, reversion, change, atrophy,deterioration, disintegration, decline, loss, aphasia, shift, erosion, obsolescence, weakening,regression, mutation and decay. However, among all these terms, attrition is prevailed and themost frequently used one in the field of applied linguistics. And thus attrition will be used todescribe the phenomenon of a decrease in language skills proficiency in the present study.Language attrition was established as a separate area of academic language research on aconference held at the University of Pennsylvania on the attrition of language skills. In thisconference, Lambert and Freed (1980) presented the following definition of language attrition:Broadly defined, language attrition may refer to the loss of any language or any portion of alanguage by an individual or a speech community. It may refer to the declining use of mothertongue skills by those in bilingual situations or among ethnic minorities in (some) languagecontact situations where one language, for political or social reasons, comes to replace another.Language attrition also refers to the deterioration of language skills in neurologically impairedpatients and to the decline of certain types of language usage by the elderly. Likewise, languageattrition may be used to describe the death of an entire language.
