摘要:According to the researchers abroad, the process of language attrition is affected by thefactors such as proficiency level prior to attrition, time of attrition on set, exposure to targetlanguage, age of language attrition, foreign language learning mode, affective factors, andliteracy.

Part one Introduction


1.1 Background to the Study
It has been observed that English is becoming more and more important in China since Opening Reform in 1978. In fact,“English fever” is reflected in many aspects of many Chinese for more than 30 years. Take Chinese students for instance, they begin to learn English from kindergarten till high school in order to enter a famous university or college, because English scores (150)account for 20﹪ of the total scores (750). Then for all the university and college students, they have to learn English well to pass CET‐4 or CEB‐3 in order to graduate successfully. Even if they seek for a job, English competence is still one of the basic standards for employment and promotion in many positions of professions. Since English plays a very important role in many aspects of the Chinese students, they devote themselves to English learning. Consequently, tremendous money, time and energy has been invested so that they can pass different tests. They lose the interest in English learning after the English tests especially after graduation. Thus their English competence failed away gradually because little time and energy is invested in English learning. This result is very unfavorable to the development of English education of China.

1.1研究背景
据观察,英语变得越来越重要,中国在1978年改革开放以来。事实上,许多中国人在很多方面超过30年的“英语热”反映。比如中国学生,他们从幼儿园直到高中开始学英语,为了进入一所著名大学或大学,因为英语成绩(150)占20%的总得分(750)。然后所有的大学和学院的学生,他们有学好英语通过CET-4或CEB-3为了顺利毕业。即使他们寻求一份工作,英语能力仍是许多职位的专业在就业和晋升的基本标准之一。由于英语的中国学生在很多方面起着非常重要的作用,他们潜心学习英语。因此,已投入巨大的金钱,时间和精力,使他们可以通过不同的测试。他们在英语学习失去了兴趣,尤其是毕业后的英语测试后。因此,他们的英语能力逐渐远离失败,因为很少的时间和精力投入在英语学习中。这个结果是中国英语教育的发展十分不利。

 

Compared with the great effortscommitted to the research of EFL acquisition, little notice was paid to English language loss.However, researchers abroad showed great interest in the issue of language attrition in thelatest 30 years. The conference on the attrition of language skills convened by Richard Lambertat the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 marks the establishment of language attrition as aseparate area of academic language research.The three decades witnessed a great number of research fruits from researchers abroad.Compared with the prosperity of the language loss research abroad, the field of languageattrition was given limited attention in China.


1.2 Significance of the Study
Compared with the vigorous study of language attrition abroad, language attrition receiveslittle attention domestically. Till now, a limited number of studies focused on the issue of EFLattrition under Chinese context. A great number of them are introductory essays or literaturereview of language attrition by Zhong Shuneng(2003), Li Ping(2004), Cai Hansong(2004), NiChuanbin(2006), He Jinyuan(2006). On the contrary, many studies in China clusteredinvestigating the methods of improving the second language acquisition in the traditional way,which is unable to solve the problem of language attrition. So the paper that explore genderdifferences of English attrition of Chinese EFL students are urgently needed under such circumstances.


1.2.1 Theoretical Value
