Whenthe Hong Kong natives want to express a concept, it is the English word of it that firstcomes to their minds. As a result, it is always the case that a Hong Kong native wouldinsert English words into their Cantonese expressions.Since code-switching is very common in Hong Kong, it can provide a lot ofspontaneous and natural examples for the studies of it.

1.3 The Rationale for the Present Study

There are a lot of significance attached to the topic and the methodologies: boththeoretical and practical.Since the 1970s, the phenomenon of code-switching has aroused the attention andthe interest of scholars both at home and abroad. From then on, there appeared a lot ofapproaches to the studies of code-switching: sociolinguistics, grammatical,psycholinguistics and pragmatics.However, the sonic and non-functional aspects of C-E CS are left out of the scopeof the traditional researches.As a result, the writer attempts to explore these two neglected areas and to findout whether the conclusions made about the general code-switching can still beapplied to the special case of Cantonese and English Code-switching in Hong Kong.What is the point of using the data collected from the TV programs?Firstly, The TV programs, like any other kinds of human creations, are one kindof human arts. The method of using the works of art of an age to study the languageof that period of time is well-reasoned. If we can use the literature of a period, thenwe can also use the TV programs to study that period.Secondly, since the TV Program come from and are a mimic of our daily lives,the situations depicted therein are very close to the spontaneous speeches in reality.Therefore, we can say that the conclusions we make from the data of the programscan, to a very large extent, show what is actually going on in our reality. In addition,all the programs this study chooses are the popular ones, which can also add to thetruthfulness of this study.Thirdly, the TV programs can provide a lot of examples in very convenient waysfor us to study. Even though code-switching is very common in reality, yet to collect alot of examples of it in various situations cost a lot of time. In this sense, using thetranscriptions from the TV programs provide us with a lot of convenience.

1.4 The Objectives of the Present Study

The general objective of the present study is to provide an overall perspective ofthe Cantonese and English code-switching in Hong Kong. It aims to present aphonetic, phonological, morph-syntactic, and functional view of the phenomenon ofCantonese- English code-switching. That is to say, the present study will analyze thephonetic features, the phonological features, the morph-syntactic features of CS andshed some light on the distinction between the function-fulfilling CS and thenon-function-fulfilling ones.To be more specific, this thesis tries to answer these 4 questions:Are some sounds more likely than others to be switched? If yes, what traits dothey possess?Will the switched words undergo some sounds changes? If yes, what are theseprocesses?What elements are more likely to be switched? Nouns? Verbs? Adjectives? Orprepositions?Can a speaker have no function to fulfill when he switches to another language?This is the theoretical purpose of this thesis.
