he switched words do undergo sound change. There are mainly threekinds of changes. These changes are epenthesis-the insertion of a sound or sounds,deletion-the disappearance of a sound or sounds and replacement-the substitute of onesound for another sound. It is found that all these three kinds of sound changes arevery common in Cantonese-English CS.Thirdly, Cantonese-English CS does have some morph-syntactic features. It ismore likely to take the form of ML+EL (Matrix Language + Embedded Language) orEL Islands (Embedded Language Islands). What’s more, intra-sentential CS is moreoften than inter-sentential CS.; Word CS is more frequent than letter CS, phrase CSand sentence CS; Noun CS and Verb CS are more frequent than other kinds of CS. Inaddition, it is also found that the word order is determined by the Matrix Language,and that the grammatical makers are all form the Matrix Language and that the wordcategory of the switched will be changed.Fourthly, there are two kinds of CS. One of them is function-fulfilling CS and theother is non-function-fulfilling CS. On the one hand, the motivations of thefunction-fulfilling CS can be the adaptation to the linguistic reality, the adaptation tothe social conventions, the adaption to the psychological purpose, the adherence to theeconomic principle and the drawing attention with interjections. On the other hand,there are no motivations behind those non-function-fulfilling CSs. They become ahabitual use through time with no particular purpose to achieve. Speakers use itinvoluntarily rather than deliberately.All in all, the thesis has delved into the phonetic, the phonological, themorph-syntactic and the functional perspective of Cantonese-EnglishCode-Switching.

9.2 Implications

Through the discussion in the thesis, this study has made some contributions.Firstly, the present study contributes to the better understanding ofCantonese-English Code-Switching. The phonetic and phonological analysis of it is asupplement to the previous researches.Secondly, this thesis also provides a general and comprehensive study of thedifferent aspects of Cantonese-English.Last but not least, this study sheds light on the language situation in Hong Kongwhere people tend to switch between English and Cantonese.

9.3 Limitations

Though this thesis has attained the goal it sets out to achieve in the first place, italso has some limitations.Firstly, in the process of achieving an all-round analysis of Cantonese-EnglishCode-Switching, it inevitably fails to analyze every aspect in detail. The analysis ofeach aspect is not deep enough.Secondly, more data should be collected and analyzed. The discussion of thisthesis is mainly based on the transcriptions of four TV programs. In order to be morecomprehensive and convincing, data of this source can be more and data of othersources can also be more.Thirdly, this thesis is a synchronic study of CS; therefore, it neglects the dynamicchange of CS across time.9.4 SuggestionsThis thesis has analyzed Cantonese-English Code-Switching generally. However,because of the limited competence of the author, much of this field has not beentouched upon, which leaves area for others to study further.
