摘要:Generally speaking, a language has both spoken and written forms,its spokenform is often the first resort in terms of its communicative fiinction. A good commandof pronunciation will enable the speaker to express himself effectively.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the study
A "language" is not a particularly linguistic notion at all. Linguistic featuresobviously come into it, but it is clear that there are factors of politics, geography,history, sociologic and culture, "Dialect" refers to varieties which are grammatically(or maybe lexically) as well as phonologically different from other varieties.("Variety" means a neutral term to apply to any particular kind of language and isconsidered as a single entity) "Accent" refers to the way in which a speakerpronounces, and therefore refers to a variety which is phonetically and /orphonetically different from other varieties. According to the characteristics, formation and development of dialect as well asthe result of investigation, modem Chinese dialect can be divided into severalcategories. Now the scholars of Chinese language have not yet fully agree on theways of dividing the dialects,however,the majority think that modem Chinese language has seven dialects: Northern Dialect, Wu Dialect (represented by SuzhouDialect),Xiang Dialect (represented by Changsha Dialect), Gan Dialect( representedby Nanchang Dialect),Hakka( represented by the dialect in Mei County, GuangdongProvince),Min Dialect (represented by Xiamen Dialect) and Yue Dialect(representedby Guangzhou Dialect). Wnxi Dialect belongs to Wu Dialect, and this thesis is goingto focus on the negative transfer ofWuxi Dialect on the phonetics of English.

1.2 Significance of the study

It is all-knownthat the better one's pronunciation is,the easier he will be confident whencommunicating with other people. Just as Gimson puts it, "in order to master alanguage, one needs to acquire 1% of its vocabulary, 50%-90% of the grammar, andyet 100% of its phonological knowledge", proper speech sounds make internationalcommunication possible and effective.The issue of cross-linguistic influence during second language acquisition hasalways an important topic in SLA research. During the last decade, however,there hasbeen increased interest in a relatively under-explored field: third language acquisition.From the point of view of cross-linguistic influence, the question arises as to how thetitiree languages interact with one another during the language learning process. Aninteresting finding is that during L3 production, the language learner oftenunintentionally produces interlanguage forms that consist either partially orcompletely of L2 forms.Different dialects have different phonetic systems. Most of EFL (English as aForeign Language) learners are probably influenced by their native language soundsystem in every aspect of English acquisition. When learning English,studentsusually pronounce it with a certain accent unconsciously. This is because of theinfluence of the regional phonetic system. According to Krashen, the fluencies ofnative language can be seen clearly from the learner's pronunciation. EFL learners inChina do have this kind of problem. It is often not difficult to distinguish where aspeaker comes from once he or she speaks,and the same problem with the study ofEnglish.
