摘要:Nowadays, the essential goal of learning English is developing the learner’sability of verbal communication. However, it always exist many problems in languageperformance, even if the language ability is obtained. Among them, the research aboutoral fluency is even more important.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Research background
In the process of English learning, there are four important skills---listening,speaking, reading and writing, and all of these four aspects are noticed by teachersand students, especially for speaking. In China, the ability of speaking is weak formany learners, and the phenomenon of dummy English become general. Thus, how toimprove the ability of speaking becomes an important and serious problem.As to the aspect of speaking, it is called as oral production in the research ofsecond language acquisition, and it is also the core subject in many disciplines.However, it’s relatively difficult to make the research of the oral production forsecond language learners, because the oral production is difficult to collect andanalyze. Until 1995, some researchers of second language acquisition started toresearch oral production, and make influential progress.In recent years, there are many researchers paying attention to the oralproduction of undergraduates. Meanwhile, the subjects of the researches are widelychosen from children to adults. For most undergraduates, the current situation of oralproduction is just passable, and it mainly presents in three aspects---fluency, accuracyand appropriateness. Just as its name implies, oral fluency means the smooth ofutterances without too much pauses, hesitation, omissions and so on. However, thereare still many undergraduates who can’t communicate with others in fluent utterances.As to oral accuracy, it requires learners using the pronunciation, vocabulary andgrammar correctly, but it is still difficult for many learners to speak not onlyconsidering accurate expression, but also laying stress on speaking smoothly. Some ofthe language learners pay too much attention to the content of oral production, and itleads to the interruption of thought, then fluency is influenced; Meanwhile, some ofthe learners emphasize fluency blindly, and can’t correct the errors in time, then itinfluences accuracy a lot. As to oral appropriateness, it means that the language whichis used accord with the objective language’s cultural and communicative principle,that’s to say, learners can let out appropriate words in certain occasions. For manyundergraduates, most of them have already mastered the language knowledge, butlacked comprehension of the objective country’s culture, so it directly leads to theclash in utterances.

1.2 Necessity for the study
Nowadays, the essential goal of learning English is developing the learner’sability of verbal communication. However, it always exist many problems in languageperformance, even if the language ability is obtained. Among them, the research aboutoral fluency is even more important.The purpose of the present study is to investigate the development of oral fluencyin the certain English major students, then propose some suggestions to the Englishteaching and learning. Through investigating current situation of English majorundergraduates, we find the present study is rather necessary.Till now, most of the research which concentrate on the development of oralfluency just collect the language materials in two times, then make a comparisonthrough T-test in SPSS. For the study, it collects the language materials in three timesamong one and a half years, then compare and analyze the data of different indicesthrough T-test.
