I. Introduction

1.1 Background
Journalism is as a channel to deliver information in the politic, finance andeconomy, sports and entertainment and so forth. Readers can obtain first-handinformation and expand their outlook on current issues and events in a fast and directway. One of the most essential principles for journalism is to be objective. Meanwhile,journalism, especially the commentary, has been an important means of affecting thevalues and opinions of readers regarding a particular issue or event.Journalism is an integrate part of our life. Language of journalism is different fromthat of literature work, academic reports and other kinds of language. As for newsreports, the reporters have to give information as much as possible in limit space. Asfor news commentaries, the commentators have to express the opinion in objectiveway as well as at a special angle. Therefore, the language of journalism is complicated.What's more, it reflects the latest changes and new creations in the language, as newwords and sentence structures appear constantly. As a result, linguistic researchersattach great importance on the study of journalistic language.What studies have been done on journalistic language? Taking a panoramic viewof these studies, the author finds there is a load of journalistic language studies fromthe aspects of critical discourse analysis, genre and stylistic analysis, and journalisticwriting. Take stylistic features research for example, the researchers have examinedthe language of news reports from lexical level and syntactical level. Besides, RegisterTheory is also applied to journalistic language studies of which news reports are themost common to be analyzed. News commentaries are hardly to be analyzed from thisperspective.

1.2 Objectives of the thesis
The research objectives of the thesis are as follows:First, the thesis aims to investigate the language of news report and newscommentary in terms of field’ tenor and mode within the theoretical framework ofRegister.Secondly, the thesis also attempts to reveal the linguistic similarities in anddifferences between news reports and news commentaries. Thirdly, the author wishes this thesis could provide empirical Reference to andinsights in the writing of news report and new commentary for both student writers andprofessional journalists. Nowadays, news reports are explored with various research approaches such ascritical discourse analysis, stylistic, or Systemic Functional Grammar. ThoughRegister Theory has been applied to the study of news reports, comparatively fewerstudies have been conducted about news commentaries, not mentioning thecomparison of the linguistic features between news reports and news commentaries.Therefore, the proposed study can branch the research scope of language varietyinto the scope of English news reports and news commentaries. It is hoped that thisstudy can promote better understanding and appreciation of the language of Englishnews report and news commentary on current affairs and help the audience have adeepen understanding of these two journalistic genres.
