摘要:This research focuses on the intercultural citizenship education in Chinese Englishclassrooms in China and tries to work out some ways to develop students' criticallanguage-cultural awareness through English language education.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Problem Statement
To carry out the intercultural citizenship Education in China is to combine theintercultural education with the Chinese citizenship education. The study on citizenshipeducation in China started much later than the similar studies in western countries, sothere is a need to know how citizenship education develops in China and how Chinesestudents understand about citizenship and intercultural citizenship. Meanwhile theintercultural education in China focuses on intercultural communication and emphasizeson cultivating intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among foreign languagelearners. What do Chinese foreign language learners know about citizenship andintercultural citizenship? There is still no explicit answer to this question. In addition,how and by what principles can Chinese students be great interculturalists in theglobalized context? This research aims to find out the answers to these questions andsome effective methods to prepare Chinese students for the current and future socialcomplexity.

1.2 Research Purpose
This research focuses on the intercultural citizenship education in Chinese Englishclassrooms in China and tries to work out some ways to develop students' criticallanguage-cultural awareness through English language education. As opening to theoutside world and the globalization continuously influencing Chinese people throughmass media coverage and intercultural communication on every aspect of life, Chinesepeople started to accept and think about some new ideas like citizenship, modernity, andglobalization. In facing the modern task of establishing harmonious and legal China,there is a new goal for educators. That is to carry out systematic and reasonableintercultural citizenship education to the current Chinese English language education inEnglish classrooms at universities and colleges in order to prepare adequately skillfuland qualified Chinese graduates for the requirements of global needs.

Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Intercultural Citizenship Education
The term of intercultural citizenship education is actually coined by Byram (2007)to express his model in educating and socializing people into an international identity. Itadds a new dimension by combining language education with political education as aresponse to globalization. In this part, the concepts and studies of citizenship andintercultural citizenship from home and abroad are reviewed. Generally speaking, citizenship refers to “the link between a person and a state oran association of states. It is normally synonymous with the term nationality althoughthe latter term may also refer to ethnic connotations. Possession of citizenship isnormally associated with the right to work and live in a country and to participate inpolitical life. A person who does not have citizenship in any state is said to be stateless(2013).”However this concept has been introduced and developed by Chinese scholarsthrough generations. It has been explained that from 1912 to 1949 the Confucianismwas replaced by the western concept of ‘nation-state’ in the end of 19thcentury.
