Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background to the Research
The facts that N and L can be found in many languages and they often confusewith each other result in a hot research about them in phonetics. From an acoustic view,they are the same at they all have low amplitude and split with vowels, different at Lhas stable formant, especially the second one[1]. N and L confusion exists in manylanguages because they have the same manners of articulation, only different atmanners of airflow obstruction. The discerning of N and L need be taken in manydialects, such as the Southern Dialects, Official Dialects among which Sichuan Dialectis so typical that people there have to regard this discerning as a key obstacle inMandarin Chinese study[2]. There are six kinds of nasals in modern Chinese[3], threeof which can be found in Sichuan Dialect. The discerning of nasal and lateral inSichuan Dialect has been in a discussion for a long time.The author consulted the recent key periodicals about foreign languages andeducation inside China and found that many scholars had done some comparativeresearches between Chinese dialects and English pronunciation, for example, XiaoYanli analyzed students’ pronunciation in Kejia Dialect district[4]; Kong Jian exploredShandong Dialect’s influence on English consonant acquisition[5]; and Li Xiaonaresearched English pronunciation acquisition and studying strategies of YueDialect[6].However, very few articles or papers about Sichuan Dialect can be seen inChina. Only Ma Chuandong[7]and Luo Song[8]made a comparative research betweenSichuan Dialect and English pronunciation, and found that Sichuan Dialect has a negative transfer on English pronunciation. It is a pity that these researches mostlystopped at the theoretical analysis, so the author thinks it will be a new and meaningfulresearch view if the experimental methods are chosen to study the negative transfer ofSichuan dialect on English pronunciation.

1.2 Significance of the Research
Among the different ways, sound locates the first place if a person wants tocommunicate with people around, and then the others. According to Gimson A.C., onemust master 100 percent speech sounds, 50-90 percent grammar and 1 percent vocabulary[13]. Speech sounds consist of basic phonemes, and native N and L confusionin Sichuan district has blocked the study of mandarin Chinese and foreign languagespeech sounds.Not only the production but perception can display N and L confusion in Sichuandistrict. According to Ma Chuandong, Perception can affect the listening acquisitionfirstly, and then affect the study of vocabulary. Such confusion can cause manyproblems to the people in Sichuan during their studying other native language skills andforeign language skills[7]. Everybody can give the answer about who will be moreattractive to the interviewers between the first candidate who speaks fluent and standardmandarin Chinese and English and the second one who even has trouble distinguishing“line” and “nine”, “男医生” and “蓝医生”.
