2.2 Studies on Consonant Clusters and Initial Consonant Clusters
In this part, studies on consonant clusters and initial consonant clusters are listed andsummarized from overseas and China respectively. Generally, temporal studies on consonantclusters and initial consonant clusters overseas account for a larger partIt was Bloomfield (1961) who first defined the term consonant clusters as:“Since eveiy utterance contains, by definition, at least one syllabic phoneme, the simplestway to describe the phonetic structure of a language is to state which non-syllabic phonemesor groups of non-syllabic phonemes (clusters) appear in the three possible positions: initial,before the first syllabic of the utterance; final’ after the last syllabic of an utterance; andmedial hetM^een syllahicsTRoach (2008) defined consonant cluster as When we have or more consonantstogether we call them a consonant cluster. ??,which later becomes one of the mostauthoritative definitions in terms of consonant clusters.In China,the most professional definition of consonant cluster is regarded as ''At thebeginning or end of a syllable’ the combination of or three or more consonants jointogether, followed by vowels, is called a consonant cluster. ” from Luo (2009).Initial consonant clusters have two types of combinations: two consonants and threeconsonants (Huang, 2009). The most common combination of consonant clusters is “stop +/「/’,which is usually observed in English, French,German and Russian (Luo,2009).Therefore, two-element consonant clusters ending with /r/ phone are decided to be studied inthis thesis as the research target.
