摘要:委婉语是一种人类为了避免打扰他人而使用的较为礼貌或者愉快的避讳别人的一种方式,几乎所有的文化中都有一些概念或事物应当避免直接提及的,即使他们的语言就是这样一个词,这就需要用委婉语来表达。中国有着丰富悠久的文化传统,因此在中国使用委婉语的情况更加的普遍。除了日常交流意外,委婉语更广泛的运用在政治、经济和人类生活的方方面面,特别是在教育方面。

will focus on the significance of applying euphemisms in English class and effective ways teachers can adopt in order to apply euphemisms in English class appropriately. The study is based on the previous studies but has progress which will be helpful for English teaching.
 
2. Theoretical analysis of euphemisms
 
2.1 Face Theory
 
In western countries, the concept of face was first proposed by American sociologist Erving Goffman in 1967. He believed that face is the social value for which people fight effectively through a specific communication behavior. To a certain extent, face is a person's identity. In communication, face can be possessed, can be lost and can be retrieved, that is to say, face dynamically exists in the communication process instead of being static in individual. When we communicate with others, face may encounter all kinds of threats from the outside world around us, so we will do our best to save face nearly out of instinct. Goffman believed face-saving is meaningful and necessary. In order to save face, people try to be the self-controlled individuals in daily communications, that is to say, only when people take each other’s need of face into consideration, have face-saving work and respect each other, then there will be regular communication order which will not be thrown into confusion because of individuals’ desire of doing everything only for self.


Just as mentioned above, the study of euphemisms on any certain aspect is not enough, especially in education. In recent years, the quality of education has attracted more and more attention of the public. In the last decades, most of people think the score is the only factor which decides the quality of education. In fact, the quality of education refers to every aspect of a student even many studies indicate that the percent of mental factors keep rising year by year. This means a teacher not only needs to teach knowledge but also is concerned about the mental health of his/her students. Because most of the communication between students and teachers happen in the class, every word teacher has said may have different effect on students. If a teacher often abuses students or uses offensive words, students will not only learn the bad habit but also have psychological shadow which will have great side effect in their later life. From this aspect, the application of euphemisms in class is very necessary. At the same time, with the development of reform and opening up, English has been the second language of students in domestic. Owing to the cultural differences between western and oriental, inappropriate words which a teacher uses may offend or hurt students. Therefore, in order to avoid harm and embarrassment, English teachers have the duty to use euphemisms in class. This thesis will focus on the significance of applying euphemisms in English class and effective ways teachers can adopt in order to apply euphemisms in English class appropriately. The study is based on the previous studies but has progress which will be helpful for English teaching.


Brown and Levinson’s “Face Theory” which includes three basic concepts: ‘’face”, “face threatening acts” and “politeness strategies” was the further development of Goffman’ concept of face.
