n. In English class, words which give directions are those teachers use to make students do something according to their wishes. Under the New course reform, these words are expected to show the respect and politeness to students. Teachers’ appropriate application of euphemisms can achieve this effect. For instance, in order to lead in the new lesson, teacher may say “First, let’s watch a video’ or let’s see some pictures.” The application of “let’s” will not make student have the feeling of being commanded and the most important advantage is that it shortens the distance
between students and their teachers. During the teaching procedures, in order to check teaching effect timely, asking questions in the class is usually employed by teachers. Teachers’ appropriate ways of asking questions always can produce a kind of encouraging effect and then eliminate students’ nervousness and make students participate class activities positively and actively. For example, “I’m sure you can give us a good answer.” “I believe you can say something about it.” “Do you agree with me, try to give me your reasons?” “Would you like to express your own opinion about it?” Besides, imperative sentence also is a kind of words which can give directives. Usually, they are direct and gruff. If teachers can use “please” “afraid” “would” and “could”, etc, the commanding tone can be weakened or transformed into polite request.
4.3 Offering Encouragement
Using encouraging words can establish a good image in students’ minds and make them cooperate with teachers more positively in the teaching activities. Just as mentioned above, students have the desire to be accepted and praised. When students finish the task, no matter it is easy or difficult, successful or failing, teachers should adopt appropriate encouraging words to make students more confident and then make the relationship between teachers and students more harmonious. When the task is successful, teachers can say “You did a very good job!” “That’s better than I could do.” When it is failing, in order to protect students’ face and self-esteem, teachers should not negate their fault directly but should use words such as “I’m sure you can do better next time.” “You have made great progress than last time”, etc.
4.4 Making Evaluation
Evaluative words are words which teachers use to evaluate students’ classroom acts. They can be divided into positive evaluation and negative evaluation and any one of them is dispensable. Positive evaluation is based on praise. To some extent, this can meet students’ needs to praise and stimulate students’ enthusiasm. For instance, “Very good” “Good job” “Excellent” and so on. When making negative evaluation, teachers not only need to point out students’ fault, but also save face for students and protect students’ self-esteem. For example, when criticizing students, teachers should use “we” instead of “you”, which may be easy to accept by students. When students can not answer the question, in order to save face for students, teachers can say “It’s difficult for us to solve this problem, I believe you have done your best.” If a student does not finish the homework, teacher can say “We should spend more time in learning English”. Besides, for the students whose study is bad, teachers can not say directly “He is stupid”, instead, they should say politely “He is a bit slow for his ag
