1.1 Background information
 

A Euphemism is a polite or more pleasant word or expression you use instead of a more direct one in order to avoid upsetting others. Almost all cultures seem to have certain notions or things that people try to avoid mentioning directly, even if there is such a term in their language. When it comes to China which has a long history and rich cultural tradition, this phenomenon is even more common. Except being used in daily communication, Euphemisms have also been used in politics, economy, and all aspects of human’s life, especially in education. With the advocating of family planning, nuclear family becomes more and more. This leads to parents putting almost all of their attention on their children. To a certain extent, this phenomenon means that parents will have higher demands on the quality of school education and then increases the burden and pressure on school education. On the one hand, schools need to improve the quality of education. On the other hand, they must make sure that all of their students are healthy both physically and mentally. It may be easy to keep them healthy in physical, but it is very difficult in mental. 

Because of all kinds of reasons, such as the excessive fondness from their parents, the loneliness in their minds owing to being only children, less communication with parents, etc, today’s students are very sensitive and insecure. So teachers must pay more attention to students’ mental condition and know the importance of every word they said which may have side effect on students. At this moment, euphemisms begin to play a very important role in teaching class, especially in English class which is attracting more and more attention in recent years.

 
1.2 Literature review
 
Euphemism, as a linguistic concept as well as a cultural phenomenon, has attracted people’s attention for several hundred years. Many western scholars have made studies about euphemism from different aspects since several centuries ago, such as the definition, the usage and the origin. As more and more people make researches on euphemisms, some people begin pay attention to its practical use in our daily life such as polity, economy and education. The application of euphemisms in English class is an important field in the education. In recent decades, many scholars have made great contributions in this field from different perspectives. In 2004, Yangcuiyan, who comes from Shan Dong Normal University wrote The Application of Euphemisms in English Language Teaching. In this works, she has studied the application of euphemisms from the scope of verbal interaction and non-verbal interaction. Through the study, she concludes that non-verbal euphemistic interaction is actually more indirect and agreeable than the verbal one. The application of euphemisms is tied closely to some pragmatic theories, such as Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle, and Face Theory, and so on.
