2 Literature Review


2.1 Researches into oral testing and teaching
Oral testing mainly examines foreign language learners’ spoken competence from fiveaspects, which contain comprehension, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.Therefore, oral testing can be seen as a kind of objective and effective test to measure foreignlanguage learners’ spoken competence and analyze foreign language learners’ foreignlanguage level scientifically. A number of researchers had paid attention to the topic of foreign language testingwhich aim to illuminate written tests years ago, and most of them didn’t follow their interestsin studying oral language testing until the structuralist testing method was put forward in the1940s. It can be viewed as a new turning point that makes oral language testing become amember of foreign language evaluation.There are three developing stages in the field of language testing, which Spolsky statesthat these three stages are the prescientific period, the structuralist period and thecommunicative period(1990). Prescientific period emphasizes language knowledge andwritten tests, at this stage, teachers are the major performers in the class, so tests in this stageare filled with teachers’ subjective judgments. Oral language is not measured and mentionedin prescientific period until the emergence of structuralist approach and communicativeapproach. Hence, oral language tests are the products of structuralist and communicativeperiods.

2.2 Researches into Wash back
Over the past two decades, many people have been researched oral testing, at the sametime they also studied the oral testing’s impact on oral teaching and oral learning, which iscalled washback. Washback study has become an important aspect in applied linguistics today.Nowadays various high-stakes exams come as main streams, and learners’ learning processalways follow with the testing. Hence, researching washback has important practicalsignificance in foreign language teaching and learning. Large number of studies have beencarried out in the world to research the nature and mechanism of washback, and someempirical researches have investigated oral testing’s impact on foreign language teaching andlearning.In this section, washback’s concept, hypotheses, mechanism as well as classification arebeing stated. Moreover, some empirical studies on washback both in China and othercountries will be analyzed in details.
