is ridiculous in our friends, we are experiencing a combination of both delight and envy, that is, we mix together both pain and pleasure (Plato, 1861). Scant references to comedy in the first, and only extant, volume tell us that, in common with Plato, he saw the ridiculous as something rather ugly and distorted (Aristotle, 1934). As is widely known, theories of humor are traditionally divided in three branches. As Raskin points out humor has been claimed to emerge in three basic ways in human thought: through perceptions of relief, incongruity, and superiority (Raskin, 1985).First, incongruity theory is considered the linguistic theory of humor because it is built on the perception or reception of incongruity with the nature of humorous texts. Second, superiority theory reflects a social relationship: the relation between human and aspects of superiority such as power, conflict, or hierarchy is still central to superiority theory. Third, relief theory establishes a relation between humor and the unconscious.
