In  this  chapter,  the  author  tends  to  analyze  the  chosen  corpus  of  “Good  Luck Charlie” from the perspective of cooperative principle and its related conversational maxims. Humorous  and  witty  language  is  one  of  the  vital  elements  to  attract  the audience’s attention in situation comedy. With a flash of wit or humor conversation, sitcom  charming  the  audience  and  catch  them  off  guard.  In  order  to  study  how  is verbal  humor  generated  through  the  violation  of  Cooperative  Principle  and  its  four maxims. The chosen dialogues from “Good Luck Charlie” are analyzed. The  author  randomly  chooses  15  episodes  from  the  second  season  of  the situation  comedy  “Good  Luck  Charlie”,  after  the  painstaking  data  preparation,  the process  resulted  in  a  corpus  of  2185  items  of  humor  which  based  on  the  canned laughter, in these items includes 1744 items of verbal humor, 441 items of non-verbal humor  which  are  caused  by  gesture,  action,  and  so  on  and  so  forth.  There  are  1349 humorous  items  from  Cooperation  Principle  with  the  highest  percentage,  about 61.739% in verbal humor. In this thesis, there are some other reasons of verbal humor which will not be involved. The following tables will show a good illustration of final results from the perspective of the violation of Cooperative Principle.

Conclusion

Humor is a very prevalent but complex phenomenon with a long study history. In the early years, most studies on humor focus on the fields of philosophy, sociology, psychology,  and  so  on  and  so  forth.  Nowadays,  however,  with  the  development  of pragmatics, more and more scholars began to study verbal humor from the pragmatic perspective. Herbert Paul Grice had come up with the theory of Cooperative Principle which is the general regulation of conversational implicature, meanwhile, Cooperative Principle is also one of the important theories of pragmatics. In this thesis, the author uses the Cooperative Principle and its four maxims to analyze verbal  humor  in  the  sitcom  “Good  Luck  Charlie”.  It  shows  that  CP  has  a  strong explanatory power on verbal humor. That is to say, in the process of generating and interpreting humorous utterances Cooperative Principle plays an important role. The author summed up the findings as follows: In  this  paper,  the  author  uses  Cooperative  Principle  as  the  fundamental  theory supporting all the data analysis. Quantitative method is used to collect the data.
