1   Introduction 

The postmodernist literature springs up from the nineteen-fifties and sixties. The works are  famous  around  the  world  for  the  writing  characteristics  that  are  different  from  the traditional ones. Donald Barthelme is viewed as a very outstanding postmodernist novelist in the  twentieth  century.  His  masterpiece  Snow  White  contains  many  postmodernist characteristics and sufficiently reflects the way that Barthelme uses to his creation. 

1.1   Donald Barthelme and his Works 
Donald Barthelme’s father worked on architecture, whose design style which was full of modern features had an invisible influence on Barthelme’s preference to modern style in the future literature. Painting, graphics and many other kinds of modern arts also appeared in his works.  And  Barthelme’s  attitude  to  his  father  could  be  seen  in  his  novel  The  Dead  Father (1975).When Barthelme was still a young boy, he was interested in writing. When studying in high school, he started to write stories and poems and served as an editor of school newspaper. He  won  the  Poet  Laureate  of  Texas  Award  and  the  forth  place  in  a  Scholastic  Magazine contest  with  a  poem  and  a  short  story  respectively,  which  gave  him  more  confidence  and encouraged  him  to  go  on  his  writing  career.  While  studying  journalism  in  University  of Huston, he joined in editing the magazine Cougar. Later, he became an editor of Huston Post in artist and entertainment parts. Those experiences provided him with good opportunities to improve his own writing skills. For example, his writing style of combining satire with humor was  developed  during  editing  the  college  paper.  During  the  college  years,  he  was  also interested  in  philosophy,  especially  existentialism,  and  he  read  Sutter’s  and  Camus’s  works carefully.  He  loved  reading  modern  poems,  the  literary  theory  of  modernism  and  the  critic theory of formalism.After ending the college life, he lived in the Big Camp—Greenwich village in New York, which  was  a  gathering  place  for  the  youth  who  opposed  traditional  culture.  There,  many famous  writers  got  together,  such  as  Grace  Paley,  William  Gass,  Vonnegut,  Bathe  and  they could  communicate  different  thoughts  freely  with  each  other.  Therefore,  in  Barthelme’s novels,  readers  would  often  see  the  Greenwich  village,  particularly  the  obvious  trace  of Western Village.
