Chapter 1 Introduction
The present research aims to investigate the effects of recitation-imitationteaching approach on Chinese EFL students’ CET4 English writing. This chaptermainly presents about the introduction and the background of this study. It starts withbackground information about the problems and importance for Chinese universitystudents to learn writing in English as a second or foreign language. And then thepurpose and significance of the research, the main contents and research questionswill be presented, and the framework of this study and a summary are describedbriefly in the end.
1.1 Background of the Research
With the development of globalization, among countries’ communicationbecome more and more frequent. Learning a second or foreign language plays anincreasingly important role. In China, since 2009, our national ministry of educationhas highlighted improving students’ English comprehensive ability, such as speaking,reading, listening and writing. Of all these skills, writing it is a very complex process,for writing not only reflects one’s mastery of vocabulary and grammar but also one’scompetence of organizing, analyzing, expressing and reasoning logically, in resultwriting can reflect one’s actual language ability. When writing a composition inforeign language, it is not only needs the ability of basic writing knowledge, such asmaking correct sentences, mastering the accurate spellings, but also needs to graspthat language’s way of thinking. Writing is an inseparable part of language learningand also can reinforce language learning in return (Bechtel, 1985). As for thesereasons, the importance of writing has been recognized by many researchers (Silva,1993; Cook, 1994; Gabrielatos, 2002), and how to improve learners’ writing abilityhas been a hot topic in theses years.

1.2 Statement of Problem
Once student reach upper-level courses of their second language learning, it isoften assumed their language ability has reaches the relative standard. However, thefact is that very few students attain this standard of proficiency. Many students are still unable to write an accurate composition in a limited time. The reasons of failingachieving the accurate composition are naturally result from students’ limitedvocabulary, poor grammatical knowledge and dull sentence patterns or their failure todevote enough time and effort to their writing. Chen (2013) asserted that because ofthe lack of language accumulation, they are easy to lose interest in writing gradually.When it comes to writing tasks, they tend to write some irrelevant materials to thegiven topic, or they actually have no idea about how to express their ideas accuratelyeven though they have a desire of expression. Actually these reasons are one aspect ofstudents’writing problem.Writing is an active and constructive process. For the freshman or the secondlanguage learner, imitation and recitation is a good way for learner to build a solidfoundation of basic skills. He (2007) even discovered that imitation can help learnersbuild their confidence on writing especially for those who are afraid of writing, forthey know little about how to write and what to write. Imitation can help learnersimprove their writing ability step by step. However, with the development of writingtheory, recitation and imitation this traditional way has been snubbed andmisunderstood.
