In Kim, Kim was an orphan first left by his mother from a colonel’s family who died of cholera and then left by his father, who was a former color-sergeant of an Irish regiment and then took a post on the railway, but later “died as poor whites die in India” (Kipling, Kim 2). His estate given to Kim consisted of his “ne varietur”, his “clearance-certificate” and Kim’s birth-certificate which all could certify that Kim was a British offspring. This detailed description leaves the reader with a room for rich imagination. However, this kind of writing technique reflects Kipling’s acknowledgment of his kinship. Kim lived a wandering life in the street for six years. Then he met the Teshoo Lama and followed him on “The Way” for a Buddhist quest. They traveled most parts of the subcontinent, just like Kipling, who also covered almost the whole India. Kim was discovered by the British Father Victor and then arranged to the British school St Xavier’s whose function was very similar to the United Services College in which Kipling attended. This school was set in British India for the education of British children. However, Kim didn’t like the school because he preferred the free life in the street with the Indians. These school experience and feeling were very similar to Kipling’s. Kipling himself had the painful schooling experience too. In a sense, Kipling imparted Kim a happy life. Kim didn’t leave the warm and friendly India and he received British education in India. By contrast, Kipling was very young when he had to leave India for education in Britain.

2.2 The Similar Identity Confusion Between Kipling and Kim
In Kim, Kim played happily with the native Indians instead of the British. In contrast, he disliked the British colonists and priests who often tried to change his manners. Though the half-caste woman who took care of him insisted that Kim should wear British clothes, Kim loved wearing the Indian costume. To the Christians who represented the mainstream British culture and British soldiers, Kim didn’t like either of them. His preference was like Kipling’s.
