Chapter One Introduction  

1.1 Research Rationale  
With  the  sustainable  promotion  of  Chinese  reform  and  opening  up  policy  and the rapid development of Chinese economy and society, more foreigners want to gain some  insight  into  China.  However,  Chinese  culture-bound  words  are  deemed  as  the language  barriers  in  international  communication.  In  order  to  establish  a  culture safety system for Chinese characteristics in order to uphold state culture sovereignty and  build  a  bridge  to  spread  Chinese  traditional  culture  widely  in  the  world,  the Chinese culture-bound words, as a basic factor in Chinese culture, become a hot spot in  the  research  of  lexicography.  The  Confucian  words  are  of  special  importance  in the  field  of  culture-bound  words.  But  it  is  even  a  question  for  Chinese  to  interpret and  translate  Confucian  classics  properly  because  their  meanings  and  usages  have been  changed  over  time,  especially  those  words  precisely  reflecting the essence of Confucianism, such as  “君子”“大人”“天道”“八卦”and so on. Chinese-English  Dictionaries,  the  reference  books  for  translating  Chinese  into English, play a significant role in cross-culture communication and transmission. The development  of  language  and  the  changes  of  words’  meaning  and  usage  should  be recorded in these Dictionaries to inherit and spread Chinese culture, which is just the deficiency  and  lacks  enough  attention  in  compiling  dictionaries.  According  to  the statistics,  there  are  only  40%  equivalents  between  Chinese  and  English,  so  how  to explain  those  words  with  Chinese  culture  background  is  an  urgent  problem  that should be paid much more attention in the lexicographical research. In recent years, Confucian  words  have  been  concerned  by  many  scholars  from  different  angles including  translatology  and  lexicography.

1.2 Research Objectives
This thesis makes a study of the Confucian words in C-E Dictionaries for CEL, which is a portion of culture-bound words. As one of the mainstreams of traditional Chinese  culture,  there  are  many  classical  Confucian  books  and  articles  written  by Confucian scholars  and  their  thoughts  and  values  of  Confucianism  have  a  profound effect  on  Chinese  language  throughout  history.  Even  though  to  this  day  some Confucian words have been given new meanings, many of them are still used in our daily life.
