Chapter One Introduction  

Paul  Mc Fedries,  the  founder  of  Word  Spy,  says  the  most  important  job  of language is to describe what is in the world. The world is constantly changing, so is the language. As the reflection of the world, language has to change to keep up with the  world.  We  are  forced  to  create  new  words  to  express  our  new  thoughts  and describe  new  things,  or  we  are  compelled  to  produce  new  meaning  for  the  existing words  to  adapt  our  new  understanding  of  the  world.  As  the  “barometer”  of  the changes  of  the  world,  new  words  give  us  a  sight  of  what  is  to  come.  They  are  the most  sensitive  and  active  part  of  the  language  and  should  be  the  focus  of  the lexicological  studies.  In  this  thesis,  the  author  will  study  meaning  constructions  of English  environment  neologisms  based  on  the  SC  model  (the  integration  of Geeraerts’s  sociosemantic  model  and  Conceptual  Blending  Theory)  from  the perspective  of  cognitive  sociolinguistics.  A  brief  introduction  of  the  study  will  be given  in  this  chapter,  which  includes  research  background,  rational  and  objective, data collection and methodology and layout of the thesis.  

1.1 Background of the Research  

As everyone knows, the Earth is the only planet within its existing solar system that provides an environment conducive to supporting life. Therefore, we should try our  best  to  protect  the  Earth.  However,  with  the  continuous  development  of  human society,  there  exist  more  and  more  environment  problems.  The  progress  of  human society is at the expense of the environment.
