Chapter One Introduction
This chapter briefly introduces the background of this research, which involves the current state of negation studies in academia and problems encountered by students in expressing negation. Then it moves on to the significance of conducting this research, and finally ends up with a sketch of the layout of the
thesis.
1. 1 Research Background
―I am sorry to inform you that we are not at all satisfied with your sister; we are very much dissatisfied with her.‖ These words make their appearances in Charles Dickens‘ novel Martin Chuzzlewit. Two distinct realizations of negative connotations are applied in this single sentence with ―not at all‖ at syntactic level and ―dissatisfied‖ at lexical level. It is obvious that ways of expressing negative meaning can be diversified owing to the difference in direct purposes, personal preferences, appropriate situations, logic processes, etc. Studies on negation are not confined to the domain of language. The author searches the keyword ―negation‖ in many electronic databases and the results turn out to be enormous in amount and diversified in content. Negation has been studied from the scope of psychology, philosophy, sociology, logics, etc. However, negation in the domain of language is far more complicated than that in philosophy, logics, for it concerns not only with linguistic forms but also with meanings. Although the peculiarities and key concepts of negation have been revealed and considerable progress has been achieved, negation has not been explored to the full extent and there is still space and perspective for further and deep studies. Negation is a pervasive phenomenon in every language. Every language must be able to express negative propositions in order to be fully functional. So far there is no language that has been detected not applying the expressions of negation. Wittgenstein (1921) holds that a language that is void of the existence of negative expressions does not deserve the designation of language, which forms the criterion of judging a language. Negation is one of the most active grammatical categories across languages.
