Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Language, in Mikhail Bakhtin’s view, stratifies into many voices. This diversity of voice is exactly a defining feature of the novel as a genre. Based on such idea, Bakhtin initiates a new word, heteroglossia in English, to appreciate and analyze the artistry of novels. The term heteroglossia can be interpreted as a simultaneous use of different kinds of voice or other consciousness, the tension between them, and their conflicting relationship within one text. It may also refer to the extralinguistic qualities of language, such as perspective, evaluation, and ideological positioning. In this way most languages are incapable of neutrality, for every word is inevitably subject to the context where it exists. The notion of heteroglossia was originally applied in literary discourse, but then it was introduced gradually into political discourse, news discourse and other non-literary discourses. News refers to those important but unknown facts that the general public aim to learn and also have to learn. It can be transmitted by all kinds of mass media. In press circles, the genre of news can be divided into two parts, namely, hard news and soft news. For one, hard news is generally regarded as the news story with serious, eventful, timely, and significant themes. In other words, hard news commonly refers to as event message with strong timeliness which contains major events at home and overseas, such as political events, military conflict, foreign activities, economic dynamics, natural disaster, and sudden incidents. This type of news discourse plays a leading role of offering the public a seasonable and convenient way to know what has happened nearby or far away. In the meantime, it can also provide people with effective basis in their political, economical, professional or daily life as it enjoys large amount of facts. In light of these reasons, hard news discourse has been gained comprehensive attention from political groups, journalists, media critics, linguists and other scholars both in China and abroad.
