ional equivalence is the representative theoryof domestication. Since no translation is completely equivalent, it is better to speak of“functional equivalence”. The so-called functional equivalence, that is, translation is toachieve equivalence in function rather than to seek the rigid correspondence of the literalmeaning of the text. He claimed that a translation of functional equivalence intends to reachequivalence in information, style, and meaning between original text and target text.( Nida,1964:159) He paid attention to fluent translation, which is obviously domestication. He alsoargued that translation is communication. “The translator must be a person who can uncoverthe difference in language and culture. An outstanding translator often assumed that a targetreader sitting in front of him when he translates. So he should make the translation acceptable.” (Nida, 1986:14). His “functional equivalence” is interlingual communicationwhich overcomes the linguistic and cultural differences between different countries. It makestranslated versions fluent and transparent. Nida came up with two levels of definitions forfunctional equivalence: “At maximal level, the target language readers should have the sameresponse to the translation as the original ones to the source text.” (Nida, 1986:87) “Atminimal level, realistic definition of functional equivalence could be stated as: the translatorscan convey the original readers’ comprehension to the target language readers.”(Nida,1986:87)
