les and expressions on linguistic level and cultural level in detail. Theseexamples give us a better understanding of domestication and foreignization. In the translatedversion, Howard Goldblatt used domestication and foreignization as well as thecomplementarity of domestication and foreignization as flexible as possible to achieve abalance between target readers and the writer.Domestication, by using the target readers’ language, avoids misunderstanding andcultural conflicts while foreignization, through absorbing the source text language, canreserve foreign flavor and promote culture communication. However, if only domestication isadopted, the translation becomes unfaithful and if only foreignization is used, the translationbecomes obscure. Therefore, both domestication and foreignization have their merits andshortcomings. They are effective translation strategies in translation. Proper using ofdomestication and foreignization is the decisive factor in a successful translation.

Conclusion
Hong Gao Liang Jia Zu is a remarkable masterpiece written by Chinese well-knownwriter Mo Yan in his early phase of writing. This novel is characterized by its speciallanguage and culture of China. In 1993, it was translated into English version Red Sorghumby the famous translator Howard Goldblatt which is spoken highly in English countries. Therefore, it is valuable and important to study its English version. In the translation field, after the culture turn, translation is studied from the traditionallanguage level to culture level. Debates on domestication and foreignization translationstrategies have been lasting for a long time and hard to say which one gains the upper handfor both of them are all of great significance to translation. Domestication brings the sourcelanguage and culture closer to the target readers, making the text familiar and easy to beunderstood and avoids misrepresentation of the source text and culture conflicts.Foreignization, on the other hand, takes the readers close to the source text, which enrichingthe expression of target language and promoting cultural communication. Therefore, this thesis chooses Howard Goldblatt’s English version Red Sorghum as acase to be studied by using the Functional Equivalence Theory of Nida and ForeignizationTheory of Venuti as theoretical foundation. Translation is a complex switching progress. Itmeans a translator neither changes one language into another one nor transforms one cultureinto another one, but a process involves both language and culture. In order to deal with theproblem about language and culture differences, two important translation strategies, domestication and foreignization are often used. Through detailed analysis of some exampleswith the domestication, foreignization and the combination of them in the case study, we drawthe conclusion that both domestication and foreignization are indispensable and vital intranslation because of their different functions and values. They are coexisting andcomplementary in translation rather than opposite to each other. Over stressing on onetranslation
strategy or ignoring the other one will cause damage to the translation. There is noa translation version absolutely under domestication or foreignization only. If domesticationgoes too far, the translation becomes unfaithful; and if foreignization goes too far, thetranslation becomes obscure. Therefore, in the translation practice, translators
