摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文遴选了《咬文嚼字》杂志 2008-2015 年评选的“十大流行语”为语料,基于维索尔伦的语用顺应理论,聚焦于流行语的三个特性研究:变异性、商讨性和顺应性。
Chapter 1 Introduction
Language is an absolutely necessary tool for human communication, and catchwords are the most active part in language. Catchwords, as a kind of popular culture, develop as the change of social phenomena, gradually, entering general vocabulary, or dying. They strongly reflect social reality, at the same time, their generation and transmission has become a striking social phenomenon, and received extensive attention. However, due to the first character of catchwords is semiotic, research results are more reflected in linguistics.In this part,research background, research objectives and significance, and data source and methods used in the
thesis are mainly to be discussed. Besides, the organization of the thesis is also presented as well.
1.1Research background
Chinese catchwords have triggered great attention among researchers, and there have been all kinds of discussions and studies about Chinese catchwords in recent years. Monographs and dictionaries on catchwords emerged in succession, such as A Panorama of Current Chinese Catchwords by Xia Zhonghua (2007), Research on Current Popular Phrases by Xu Zhaohui (2013), and A Dictionary of Popular Chinese Phrases in Englishby Li Jingrong (2014). Moreover, more researchers studied Chinese catchwords from different angles. Wu Heping&Wang Lingyan (2010) explained the inherent development mechanism, transmission process from the perspective of Memes, Cui Pengke (2012) devoted to find out the difference between catchwords and hot words, new words and net words; Wang Danrong (2011) and Zhang Pin (2011) conducted case studies on concrete catchwords.But few people did a research of catchwords from the angle of pragmatic adaptation theory, which is supposed to be a creative point in this thesis.

1.2Research objectives and significance
Based on pragmatic adaptation theory, the study aims to explore the variability of language as the context of adaptation in catchwords. As to catchwords, variability refers to variation of linguistic units that provided people with a range of possibilities to choose from. Variation modes are going to be interpreted from two aspects: one is from the form of catchwords; the other is from the meaning of catchwords. The present studyaims at illustrating how catchwords achieved negotiability as a kind of dynamic adaptation of time and space.
