Chapter 5 Results and Discussion

In this chapter, the results and the findings of the present study will be presented. InSection 5.1 the reliability of the test is reported. Section 5.2 illustrates the results anddiscussion of the two research questions, more specifically, the Mixed Measures ANOVAresults for both the comprehension and the production of five senses of English CMC. Whatfollows is an overall discussion of each research question on the basis of the results.

5.1 Reliability

After completing the empirical study, all the raw data of the test by participants of threedifferent proficiency levels were keyed into the computer. This research adopts Cronbach’sAlpha to test the reliability of the test. The data is based on the performance of the EnglishCaused-Motion Construction test by the participants of three different proficiency levels. TheCronbach’s Alpha of the receptive task (i.e., the GJT) is 0.755, (N=15). The data is based onthe scores of the 15 test sentences and the distracters were not counted. The Cronbach’s Alphaof the productive task (i.e., the C-E translation task) is 0.750, (N=15). And the Cronbach’sAlpha of the whole test is 0.856, (N=30). According to Qin (2003), the test bears anacceptable reliability.

Conclusion

In Chapter 5, the results of the empirical study have been presented. In this chapter, thediscussion of the results and its implications for L2 acquisition of English CMC will beaccordingly given. Specifically, Section 6.1 summarizes the major findings of the presentstudy. The pedagogical implications of the study will be elaborated in Section 6.2. And finally,Section 6.3 presents the limitations and the recommendations for further study.Chapter Five has reported the results of the empirical study and investigated L2acquisition of English CMC by Chinese EFL learners with different proficiency levels.
