CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Present Study
Synonym is a commonly occurred language phenomenon in English. Synonymous words are difficult to be differentiated, thus posing a challenge for second language learners in their second language acquisition (SLA). ELDs are important reference tools for EFL/ESL learners. Nonetheless, definitions of synonyms in ELDs have not been properly handled yet. Over the past twenty years, semantic prosody has attracted a great deal of attention from various researchers. Studies have shown that it not only influences the distribution characteristics of lexical items, but also plays an important role in differentiation of synonyms. Therefore it has started to attract attention from lexicographers. To date, semantic prosodic information has been incorporated into some dictionaries, though far from sufficient. The ability of categorization is one of the most fundamental in human cognition. Categorization is a mental process in which concepts and objects are recognized, distinguished, and understood. Interpretation of the process cannot be separated from language. The categorization theory has been introduced to dictionary definitions by lexicographers to achieve cognitive economy. A set of synonyms belongs to a category, thus they can be defined under the guidance of the theory. Many linguists have recognized the value of categorization-based definitions (Zhang Yihua and Huang Jianhua 2000; Zhao Yanchun 2003), whereas only a few studies touch upon establishing definition models or patterns. So far, studies on semantic prosody have been empirical investigations of lexical items (Sinclair 1991; Louw 1993; Partington 1998) and contrastive corpus analyses aimed at revealing differences between native speakers and Chinese EFL learners (Wang Haihua and Wang Tongshun 2005; Ma Zheng 2010). Few studies focus on distinguishing synonyms by semantic prosodies. Furthermore, currently the big five ELDs fail to include sufficient prosodic information. Therefore, the current work focuses on categorization-based definitions of synonyms in ELDs, with semantic prosody as a distinguishing feature represented in definitions.
