Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background Information
Ann Beattie, a contemporary American woman writer, is an influential writer since her works arouses intense responses. In the United States, both the academic critics and the common readers show great enthusiasm to her. Numerous comments about her works can be found in literary magazines and comment articles in America. Regrettably, Chinese scholars and critics pay little attention to her works and only two related articles can be found in Chinese academic journals. Almost everyone who studies linguistics is aware of the fact that the source of foregrounding can be derived from the art of painting. Its original meaning deals with that the painter sticks out the art image which he/she trying to emphasize by comparing it with other people or objects to attract the attention of the audience, so as to achieve the artistic effect the painter expected, and other people or objects
