re, some suggestions for the future studies are also presented.The thesis conducts researches on the vagueness of netspeak from the perspective of Verschueren’sadaptation theory. It attempts to apply adaptation theory into the analysis of the vagueness of netspeak.Under the guidance of this research objective, the considerable raw data has been collected from theInternet as the corpus of the research. Based on the observation and analysis of the linguistic data, thefollowing findings can be achieved:Firstly, the vagueness of netspeak is mainly generated by the following three ways: hedges, vaguewords and language variation. In other words, hedges, vague words and language variation semanticallymake netspeak have the property of vagueness, and the variation of language existing in each linguisticlevel of netspeak plays an important role in the generative mechanism of the vagueness of netspeak. TheVagueness of netspeak happens in every situation where hedges, vague words, or language variation exist.Moreover, the property of vagueness generally exists in virtual communication and performs universality.In fact, vague language is seen as a communicative strategy. The speakers can deliberately use uncertain,vague and indirect linguistic symbols to express their views to the hearers in network communication inorder to satisfy some certain communicative needs.Secondly, according to the adaptation theory, the using of vague netspeak is the result of theinteraction between making linguistic choices and language adaptability. The generation of vague netspeakis formed in the following ways: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes based on the three properties of language,such as variability, negotiability and adaptability. In order to satisfy certain communicative effects, vaguelanguage is used by communicators under a high state of consciousness.
