The four categories were concluded  according to  the deep meaning  of names  based on the Chinese  HLM: Zhi Yanzhai  Annotation, which will help the  author to discuss  in  their multi-dimensional transformation smoothly. While listing the multi-dimensional transformations adopted in each translation version, the author will have a table of the dimension transformation adopted in each English translation version. The  table  will  be  further  analyzed  with  discussion  on  the  background  of  each translator. And the eco-translation environment of each translator will also be discussed. The  author  intends  to  discuss  how  does  each  translator  adapt  and  select  the  form  of character  names  in  HLM  with  analysis  of  each  translators’  translational  eco-environment. Two of the TAS evaluation criterion will be adopted, which are the degree of the multi-dimensional transformation and translators’ quality. With a discussion on the  educational  background,  translation  experience,  and  translation  principles  of translators, the author will compare the quality of translators in each version.

Chapter Two Literature Review 

In  this  part  the  author  will  mainly  review  previous  studies  on  character  names translation under perspectives of various translation theories. Meanwhile, the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection will be reviewed as well. 

2.1 Studies of Character Names Translation of HLM 
Transliteration and liberal translation are two of the most frequently used strategies for name translation. Transliteration is to translate personal names, place names and other nouns from one  language  into  another  language  phonologically.  In  transliteration,  only pronunciation is transferred, while liberal translation means to translate deep meaning in names and make it easier for readers to understand names in the original text.  Studies  about  translation  in  English  versions  of  HLM  have  been  done  by  many scholars, among which name translation in Yang Xianyi  and David Hawkes versions has attracted attention from many scholars and translators.  Xia (2004: 136) discussed that Yang adopts transliteration to translate almost all the  names  with  Wade-Giles  system.  Different  from  Yang,  Hawkes  adopts  Chinese Pinyin system to transliterate names and another difference between name translations is that Hawkes translated names with transliteration and liberal translation according to the different social classes, careers and characteristics of characters, by which names not  only  have  referential  function  but  can  also  tell  the  social  position  of  different characters.
