Furthermore, it is to explore how the pragmatic vagueness comes into play in the language used in press conference to help the spokespersons defend the sovereignty of South China Sea and achieve diplomatic purposes. The  research  findings  of  the  present  study  will  have  certain  theoretical significance and practical value. Theoretical  value:  It  will  further  facilitate  the  understanding  of  pragmatic vagueness and reveal the explanatory power of the Adaptation Theory. Practical value:1) Press spokespersons, as the representatives of Chinese Foreign Ministry,  announce  explicit  stance  and  policy  of  the  South  China  Sea  on  behalf  of Chinese government, express the unswerving will of the government to safeguard its sovereignty  and  territorial  integrity,  disclose  the  vicious  intention  that  some  relevant countries  throw  the  South  China  Sea  into  disorder  in  order  to  help  people  be  fully aware  of  the  truth  and  falsehood  of  disputes,  and  tactfully  mitigate  the  bilateral relations  with  some  involved  countries.  By  analyzing  the  language  expressions  and skills adopted by the press spokespersons, it will help the world to realize the fact that the government pushes hard for the disputes of South China Sea a peaceful settlement. 2)  The  study  of  pragmatic  vagueness  will  offer  some  guidance  to  spokespersons  of government  at  different  levels  or  daily  conversation.  Currently,  to  get  an  impeded information  release  system,  the  Chinese  leadership  at  different  levels  are  exerting every efforts to establish and improve the news spokesperson system. The findings of this thesis will provide a Reference for spokespersons’ remarks in diplomatic activities. In  addition,  if  people  apply  the  pragmatic  vagueness  to  daily  uses,  the  conversation will be improved to the most satisfactory level. 3) The study of pragmatic vagueness will prompt interpreters to have a better understanding on the use of vague language so as to complete jobs better in press conference or other occasions. 4) The study of pragmatic  vagueness  will  be  of  great  guiding  significance  to  English  teaching  in China. It may help students to learn how to use vague language properly.

This  chapter  will  give  a  detailed  review  of  pragmatic  vagueness,  the  pragmatic vagueness in diplomatic language and the disputes of South China Sea.
