Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background 
“The  geopolitical  battleground  of  the  21st  century  is  the  ocean,  or  rather  the South  China  Sea.  How  to  handle  the  crises  and the disputes of  South  China  Sea  has become the one that is focused on in the world.” Robert Kaplan (2011), the member of United States Defense Policy Council, noted. At present, territorial disputes in the South China Sea is in hot debate internationally which makes a significant impact on the geopolitical pattern in the Asia-Pacific region and even around the world. It is of importance for the future development of the South China Sea to safeguard peace and stability  of  Asia-Pacific region.  It  thence  appears  that  it  is  self-evident  in  economic, political and strategic value of the South China Sea to the neighboring countries, even to the United States and Japan and other Asia Pacific countries. Its complexity lies in the  tangles  of  various  conflicts  and  tensions  which  not  only  includes  disputes  over territorial  sovereignty,  sea  power  and  resources,  but  includes  contradictions  between the  rising  China  maintaining  its  overseas  interests  and  the  United  States  striving  to keep  its  influence  in  the Western Pacific Region.  The  South  China  Sea  proves  to  be the  focus  of  containment  and  anti-containment  between  China  and  the  United  States as  the  most  impressive  economies.  As  a  result,  the  disputes  of  South  China  Sea  has been acting as the hot spot of related disciplines.  The South China Sea, however, has been China’s inherent territory since ancient times. What’s more, China’s sovereignty, rights and jurisdiction over the South China Sea  are  based  on  sufficient  historical  and  legal  grounds  which  are  recognized internationally  in  the  long  run.  No  one  should  doubt  that  China’s  territory  is inviolable.  Therefore,  facing  the  intervention  from  the  outside  power  with  ulterior motives,  China’s  determination  to  defend  the  territorial  sovereignty  of  the  South China Sea should be conveyed to the world with no mistakes whether in speech or in action. We should stand in the commanding heights of the international consensus.
