Chapter Four An Analysis of Obama’s Counterterrorism Speechesfrom Appraisal Theory

The framework of Appraisal Theory and the literature review have been introduced.The research questions, data collection and the methodology of the research have beendiscussed in detail in Chapter three. In this chapter, five typical counterterrorism speechesof Obama will be analyzed from the framework of the appraisal theory. The occurrencesand distribution of different appraisal resources will be concluded in detail. Then the datastatistics will be presented in the tables. Apart from the statistics of the data, thedistribution and occurrence characteristics will be analyzed through listing the specificexamples. At last, the ideologies and the personal stances will be revealed in thecounterterrorism speeches.

4.1 The Occurrences and Distribution of Appraisal Resources in Obama’sSpeeches
There are three subsystems in the appraisal system: attitude system, engagementsystem and graduation system. According to the detailed analysis, the statistical data of theappraisal resources in Obama’s Counterterrorism Speeches will be given as the following:Table 4.1 presents that the appraisal resources occur 888 times. The graduation systemoccupies the largest proportion of the appraisal resources in Obama’s CounterterrorismSpeeches. It accounts for 41.44% with the number of 368. Graduation system runs throughthe whole Appraisal System. By using the graduation resources, the aspect of the event canbe highlighted by the speakers. The listeners can be guided to form a feeling of safety fromthe dangerous situation. Apart from the feeling of safety, the graduation resources can beused to spread the positive energy so as to give the confidence to the listeners.The attitude system is in the second place. It appears 299 times and occupies 33.67%.The attitude system can be used to express the speaker’s feelings and emotions. Thepurpose of every speaker is to attract the attention of the listeners and expect to gain thealignment with them. The attitude evaluative words can be used to make thecommunication with the listeners. The intention of speakers can be achieved.
