1.2 Purposes of the Research
The  thesis  tries  to  investigate  the  English  pragmatic  competence  of  Chinese college students. It is based on the previous researches made by scholars from China and abroad. It aims to find out the general trend of pragmatic competence of college students  in  China  and  the  differences  between  different  genders  and  majors.  Also,  it tries  to  investigate  whether  the  higher  the  student’s  linguistic  competence  the  better their  pragmatic  competence.  The  paper  employs  three  researches  methods, respectively, a questionnaire, role play and interview. The investigation   is designed on the base of the former researchers and some pretest made among a small group of students during pilot period. Thus, the data collected is reliable.  The existing literatures on pragmatic competence most focus on request, refusal, inferring  implied  meaning  and  addressing  respectively,  no  researches  have  been combined  them  all  in  one  till  now.  Thus,  this  thesis  can  fill  the  void  of  it.  Although numerous  empirical  researches  have  been  carried  out  to  investigate  the  EFL  or  ESL leaner’s  pragmatic  competence  both  at  home  and  abroad,  few  studies  are  made  by three  instruments  at  the  same  time.  This  thesis  is  based  on  the  combination  of questionnaire,  role  play  and  interview  to  investigate  the  pragmatic  competence  of college  students  in  Tianjin  University  of  Technology.  Some  scholars  concern  the relationship  between  pragmatic  competence  and  other  affecting  factors.  Some researchers  strengthen  the  teaching  method  of  pragmatic  competence.  Few  studies combine different testing methods to provide reliable and valid data.

2.1 Previous Studies on Pragmatic Competence Abroad
