Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Orientation of the Study
Collocation, semantic prosody and colligation are important concepts andresearch contents in corpus linguistics. The idiomaticity of language expressionslargely depends on the idiomaticity of these three aspects. This study chooses threepairs of synonyms including SUITABLE and APPROPRIATE which is a pair ofadjective synonyms, FORBID and PROHIBIT which is a pair of verbal synonyms,RESULT and CONSEQUENCE which is a pair of nominal synonyms and comparestheir collocations, semantic prosody and colligation types in CLEC with those in BNC,aiming to have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese English learners’ languageusing situation, finding existent problems in it, such as unidiomaticity, misuse,overuse and underuse. Besides, differences between each pair of synonyms in BNCare also analyzed in order to offer some help to teachers and students’ synonyms’discrimination.On the one hand, we hope this study could assist teachers and students’synonyms’ teaching and learning. On the other hand, we wish this study could raiseChinese English teachers and students’ awareness of corpus-based vocabularyteaching and learning, that is, to learn collocations, semantic prosody and colligationtypes in English native speakers’ corpus. Corpus-based vocabulary learning can helpstudents memorize and extract lexical chunks quickly and efficiently. At the sametime, accuracy and idiomaticity of language expressions can be significantlyimproved.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Firstly, corpus-based study of the use of synonyms proves the validity of corpusapproach. In CLEC, we use corpus analysis software ANTCONC to analyze Chinesestudents’ use of synonyms. BNC has its own analysis software to analyze nativespeakers’ use of synonyms. We compare the data obtained from the two corpora andreach our conclusion. Concordance lines obtained from the two corpora are authenticand reliable. This study is a demonstration of the validity of corpus approach.Secondly, corpus-based study of the use of synonyms can offer help to the studyof interlanguage. Comparing the data obtained from CLEC with that obtained fromBNC, we can discover Chinese students’ deficiencies which facilitate bothresearchers’ study of interlanguage error and teachers’ targeted instruction.Thirdly, Corpus-based study of the use of synonyms may raise teachers andstudents’ awareness of corpus-based English teaching and learning. Traditional waysof teaching and learning vocabulary are largely de-contextualized. Teachers andstudents pay much attention to pronunciation, form and meaning of words, but ignorethe most important and nuclear aspect, usage. In comparison, corpus-basedvocabulary teaching and learning are convenient and high-efficient. Corpus approachdeserves to be a necessary and indispensable way of leaning vocabulary. Teachers canguide students to learn collocations, semantic prosody and colligation types of wordsin English native speakers’ corpus. Gradually, students would realize the significanceof usage and are inclined to use this approach to learn English.Finally, the data and analysis procedures of this study can be used immediatelyby teachers or they can use this approach to do other research of synonyms.Corpus-based classroom instruction is convenient and high-efficient as it providesstudents with large amount of idiomatic English expressions.
