Chapter 4 Conversion Process Analysis
This chapter analyzes the conversion process of the characters in BridesheadRevisited from the perspective of the narrative voice. According to their attitudes toCatholicism, there are mainly three types of people in the novel: the pious Catholics,represented by Lady Marchmain, Bridey and Cordelia; the half-heathens, represented bylord Marchmain, Julia and Sebastian; the agnostics, represented by the protagonist andalso the narrator Charles. The first section introduces the conversion of the pious Catholicto mainly research their sufferings; the second section introduces the conversion of thehalf-heathens to research their corruption process and faith-regaining process; the lastsection introduces the conversion of the agnostics Charles to research his religioustransformation. Various characters experience the punishment but finally convert toCatholicism in different ways. The punishment and conversion reflects the seriousness andmercy of Catholicism.
4.1 Conversion of pious Catholics
In the novel Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh mainly describes three piousCatholics, lady Marchmain, Bridey and Cordelia. They believe in the God sincerely andfinally convert to the religion deservedly. However, their journey to God is not smooth.They all gain sufferings during their conversion, which strengthen their religious faith.Based on close-reading and the theory of narrative voice, this section tries to analyze theirjourney of conversion.Lady Marchmain is the representative of the pious Catholic in the novel. Shecomplies with her duties as a Catholic. She believes in God and manages the familyaccording to the rules of Catholicism; she trains her children to be pious Catholics; sherefuses to divorce though lord Marchmain leaves her for fifteen years. She is a perfect,innocent and decent woman who will finally convert to God for granted. However, shereceives vicarious suffering before conversion. The following parts analyze hercharacteristics, her Catholic thoughts and the sufferings before conversion.

Conclusion
The thesis mainly analyzes the religious elements in the novel Brideshead Revisitedthrough analyzing the conversion process of the characters from the perspective of thenarrative theory, mainly the narrative voice proposed by Susan Lanser.
