The thesis illustrates Smith’s mediations on the fate of British marginalpersons after the French Revolution and provides an effective case study of the politicalenvision of cosmopolitanism which is an important theme of British Romantic literature.All in all, based on Weisberger’s Marginal Man Theory, the thesis explores theimages of marginal persons in The Emigrants, namely, illustrates their marginalityrepresentations and redemption directions, attempting to expose Smith’s meditations onthe fate of British marginal persons after the French Revolution, and providing readerswith a new perspective to interpret the poem and Smith’s other works.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

Charlotte Smith, a prolific poet and novelist in the 18th century, is regarded as aforerunner of British Romanticism because of her contribution in reviving sonnets andpushing forward the upsurge of Gothic novel creation. With contemporary canonization offemale poets and novelists, she receives more and more attention from scholars at homeand abroad since the 21st century. Current studies on Smith and her works focus on threeaspects: writing characteristics, themes and political views reflected in her works.

2.1 Studies on writing characteristics
Charlotte Smith is versed in creating sonnets and Gothic novels. She lives in thetransition period between sentimentalism and Romanticism. Therefore, her works carry astrong flavor of sentimentalism. Studies on Charlotte Smith’s poems concentrate on styleand tone, while studies on novels and books for children center on Gothicity and narrativestrategies.Charlotte Smith’s typical writing style is her creation of sonnets and she contributes agreat deal to sonnets. Zhang (2003) explores female romantic poets’ influences and speakshighly of Charlotte Smith’s contribution to revival of sonnets. She points out thatCharlotte Smith’s poems revives tradition of sonnets after Milton and recreates glory ofsonnets. Wang (2015) proposes similar views as Zhang. He contends that Charlotte Smithnot only innovates rhyme patterns of sonnets which promote better communication of herdeep feelings, but also brings sonnets back into people’s field of vision and promotesrevival of sonnets in the nineteenth century. Scholars mentioned above focus on CharlotteSmith contribution to revival of sonnets. However, some scholars pay much moreattention to Charlotte Smith’s innovations in sonnets.
