The American prohibition movement had a very long history. It has threesignificant periods. The starting period—the colonial era. During this era, liquor werevery popular at homes and outsides, not only grownups, but also little children coulddrink a little bit, however, most significantly, the whole situation of alcoholicbeverages had been under control, and hadn’t been a severe social problem.The second period-- the period after the Independent War, liquor consumptionhad made its sharp increase, and gradually became a serious social problem. Duringthe post Independent War period, without the aggression and control of othercountries, everything seemed to be on the right track: the agriculture had its greatimprovement, the economy, politics, culture also had gained its great development.All of these had provided a very comfortable environment for drinking liquormoderately and immoderately. And more and more people began indulged intodrinking. Gradually, crime and poverty, swept the whole country, some realized thatmoderate drinking had been far away, liquor drinking had been out of their controllittle by little, along with other social problems emerging, they began to seek solutionsto cure this severe immoderate situations.The third period—the period from the Civil War to the 1920s, had been anextremely significant period of the prohibition movement. With the passage ofVolstead Act(the national prohibition act), which established prohibition in the UnitedStates, the centuries-long prohibition movement had reached its climax. From 1860 to1910, with the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, towns andcities sprouted up rapidly all over the United States: large cities grew into greatmetropolises, small towns grew into large cities, and new towns sprang into existenceon vacant land. During the period of a rapid and turbulent transition from an agrariansociety to modern urban society, everything happened around was so strange, andtheir sense of confusion and insecurity began to expand.
