Chapter 6 Discussion

In this study, we use the basic guidelines of NA for the purpose of identifying Englishlanguage needs of the employees working in the foreign enterprises so as to get a betterunderstanding of the workplace language needs. Specifically, it also investigated the workplacelanguage needs perceived by employees working in the foreign enterprises; the perceptions ofgraduates’ workplace language needs of employers; the extent of the English language needsperceived by employees and employers matched; the composition of English competence in ForeignEnterprise. In this chapter, two parts will be divided, including the first part will summarizes theworkplace English needs perceived by employees and employers; the second part discusses theimplications for the thesis( including the implications for college English teaching).

6.1 Workplace English Needs Perceived by Employees

There are six variables of employees working in the foreign enterprises listed in the followingtable to describe the basic information, including gender, companies nature, job designation, Englishcertificate, graduation major and education level.As shown in table 6.1, among the four different company natures, joint venture companies havethe largest number and take up 34%. Cooperative ventures take up 28%, ranking the second.Foreign-owned companies take up 26% and foreign-invested companies take up 6%. Among 5foreign-invested companies, English is supposed to be used most frequently.Different positions are classified according to process of foreign enterprises. In table 6.1, thenumber of supervisors takes up 6%.The number of employees working at operational level takes up 82%. The operational levelpositions include translator, salesman and secretary, which are supposed to use Englishcommunication frequently.In terms of certificates obtained, the employees who have got CET-T4 take up 42.2%. 26.7% ofthe employees have got CET-6. The employees who have got TEM-4 and TEM-8 totally take up17.8%. All together 94.5% employees have got foreign language certificates.
