Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
With the business globalization and policysupport of government, foreign enterprises gradually enter the Chinese market. According tothe statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics of the People’s Republic of China, thenumber of the foreign enterprises has increased from 202,306 in 2001 to 460,699 in 2014,which increased by 56%. The total amount of investment of foreign companies has increasedfrom 875.011 billion US dollars in 2001 to 3.79772862 trillion US dollars in 2014, whichincreased by 77% . On the other hand , it supports more job opportunities in China and makeshigher and stricter requirements for employees. With the fast development of foreignenterprises, English, as a general communicative language, also plays a very important role ininternational cooperation.Therefore, English application abilities of employees inforeign-related enterprises will directly affect the efficiency and effectiveness of businesscontacts, exchanges and cooperation. In this context,“The requirements of talents training inthe new century” have a new interpretation.With the growth of the market demand, many companies are lack of the talents withadept English competence and professional quality. And so far the cultivation of appliedEnglish talents haven’t met the needs of rapid development of the market, which embodies inthe following respects: firstly, poor language communication ability; secondly, superficialcultural consciousness; thirdly, weak professional knowledge of English; moreover, lessopportunities for training and slow knowledge updating. Under this background, it’snecessary to have a study on English language competence requirements of employees inforeign enterprises so as to improve the workplace English language necessity and lacks.Meanwhile, English for Occupational Purpose (EOP) is becoming more and more activeand the most popular subject of ESP. ESP teaching mode was introduced into our country inthe late 1980s, the research and practice were mainly concentrated on the other two fields ofESP, but neglecting the EOP, the core element of ESP. The essence and soul of EOP is “needsanalysis” of the target. 'Needs analysis' is the starting point and center of the EOP. It is alsothe cause of the development of the EOP. Furthermore, according to Hutchinson &Waters(1987), needs analysis is a long-term process, which needed to be modified repeatedly,so more needs analysis is needed in different workplace context in China.

1.2 Significance of the Study
In China, the vocational English
Education can’t meet the needs of employment andsociety. Bai et al.(2009) made a research for 68 enterprises and found that most of employersweren’t satisfied with graduates’ English level, mainly on incompetent to complete tasks. Atthe same time, graduates generally have the idea that practical applied ability of English ismore useful for future works. Most research objects thought that English plays an importantrole in salary, promotion and future development.So this
thesis mainly investigates English Language needs of graduates working inforeign enterprises field to see how teachers in universities can change the type of materialand skills being taught in classes to meet the specific workplace needs.
