5.1 Introduction to Beyond the Horizon
Beyond the horizon is Eugene O‘Neil‘s first drama that won the Pulitzer Prize ofliterature as well as his first full-length play. This drama was written in 1918 and the firstshow was finished in Moro theatre after two years, which is the first play successfullystaged in Broadway and which established his important place in American dramatic history.There are five Chinese translators respectively about the Beyond the horizon. Gu zhongyiand Gu youcheng are the earliest Chinese translators in 1930s to 1940s. The three othertranslators appeared since 1980s—Baiye, Huang wu and Wanghairuo. The author selectsthe two Chinese versions of Beyond the horizon from Huangwu and Wanghairuo in thispaper, and I will analyze the differences between the two translators‘ translation strategybased on what strategy they have adopted in their Chinese version.Beyond the horizon is a very distinctive tragedy in American drama literary history.This drama depicts the two sons‘ life of an American farmer. As they make a wrong choiceleading to a tragic life in a series of problem of marriage, work and family life. Robert,Andrew and Lucy are the main persons in this drama, which mainly are composed of threeacts.The first act describes the life and love choices of Robert, Andrew and Lucy. Robert isa person who likes to dream since he was a little child. He dreams of leaving the boring anddull farm to pursue the distant horizon when he grown up. Finally, his dream will come truebecause his uncle Dick captain came to the farm to prepare to take him the long voyage atsea. He poured his love out to Lucy, the girl who loved by his brother Andrew, at the nightbefore he left as he was to act on impulse. He didn‘t expect Lucy accepted his love, and Lucy told him that she loves him rather than his brother Andrew. Andrew was extremelydistressed after he knew this news, and he felt that he can‘t stay at the farm any more. So hemust leave the farm where the place he used to love. Facing the sudden love, ultimately,Robert gives up his dream.

Conclusion

In the analysis of above, Wang and Huang have exploited the different translationstrategies in their translations. Owing to the differences, the reader or audience couldappreciate and know which version is better to conceive the content of O‘Neil‘s drama.Based on the domesticating and foreignizing translation strategy, this thesis focuses onWang and Huang‘s translations of Eugene O‘Neil‘s drama with Beyond the Horizon as aspecific case. Through the case study from the perspective of exoticism and acceptability, itis further proved that the employment of domesticating and foreignizing translation strategyfits for drama translation and serves as an advantageous guidance. Furthermore, thedomesticating and foreignizing translation strategy not only is conducive to convey theexotic culture of the original work but also contributes to the target language reader oraudience to learn and know about the foreign language and culture. And for the most part,the relationship between the exoticism and acceptability is closely related with therelationship between the domestication and foreignization. Therefore, the effectiveapplication of domesticating and foreignizing translation strategy in drama translation canmake the exoticism and acceptability achieve the relative balance.
