4.1 Data collection

The validity of research findings is largely accredited to the delicate and precisedata collection process. As far as this contrastive discourse analysis is concerned, thefundamental research objectives are to find out the similarities and differences interms of the distribution of appraisal resources in English and Chinese academic bookreviews and the possible contributive factors such as different discourse communitiesand values. Therefore, several factors should be paid close attention to when datacollection is being done.Firstly, Hyland (2000) has found that there exist differences in terms ofevaluative strategies between different disciplines. To remove the influence of thisdisciplinary variable, this thesis only focuses on linguistics book reviews. Besides, thesubjects under linguistics are familiar to the writer due to the major, thus the collectedmaterial is more readable for and can be easily understood by the writer, which in turnis beneficial for the accuracy and reliability of the results.Inthis thesis, considering the senior qualifications of editors and review writers, thisthesis chooses those linguistics book reviews published on the prestigious,well-recognized and authoritative journals in Chinese mainland and someEnglish-speaking countries including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and NewZealand. Therefore, four Chinese journals and four English journals are chosen as thesource of linguistics book reviews. The four Chinese journals include Journal ofForeign Languages (《外国语》), Foreign Language Education (《外语教学》), ,Foreign Language Teaching and Research (《外语教学与研究》), and ModernForeign Languages (《现代外语》). They can be found in the database China NationalKnowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). At the same time, the English journals comprisesApplied Linguistics, Language in Society, Studies in Second Language Acquisitionand TESOL Quarterly. They are found in the databases such as Oxford Academic,Cambridge Core, and Wiley Online Library.

Conclusion

The BR is defined as one genre abundant with appraisal resources. Under theframework of Appraisal Theory, the present thesis intends to conduct a contrastiveanalysis of the distributions of appraisal resources in English and Chinese LBRs andfind out both the similarities and differences. It is found out that the two groups ofreviewers have different pReferences. The major findings of this thesis are listed asfollows.Firstly, the overall statistical analyses of appraisal resources reveal that thefrequency of occurrence scaling from high to low is Engagement, Attitude andGraduation in both CABR and EABR. Within the domain of Attitude, Appreciationtakes the largest part in both CABR and EABR, with the frequency being 88.35% and85.17% respectively. In contrast, Affect (0.73% in CABR and 6.22% in EABR) takesup the smallest proportion due to its personalized quality.
