Thus, this part gives a brief introduction to letters ofclaims, including the definition, structure and principle of writing, which will behelpful for the present analysis. Moreover, studies on letters of claims are also givento prove the feasibility of this research.Correspondence refers to the act of communicating by means of letters passingbetween the two counterpart participants (Wang Ping, 1995: 59). The businesscorrespondence is often used in business transactions or for business purposes inwhich the participants are described as the writer and the reader. Businesscorrespondence is a kind of communication, specifically, “a piece of conversation bypost” (Yang Lincong, 2002: 6). According to their functions, business letters can bedivided into the following categories:
offer letters, inquiry letters, confirmation letters, introduction letters, invitation letters, thank-you letters, etc. In terms of the content ofbusiness correspondence, Stewart (1984: 380) proposed that business letters can becategorized as claim and adjustment letters, request letters, credit and collection letters, etc. From the nature of business correspondence, Riley & Mackiewicz (2003)classified business letters into bad-news letters, good-news letters, persuasive lettersand routine business letters. In addition, base on the illocutionary acts theory, businessletters can be divided into convivial letters, competitive letters, conflictive letters andcollaborative letters (Leech, 1983: 104).
